Purpose: Gamaliel the Elder was a well-respected leader in 1st century Judaism, and is mentioned as the one from whom Paul learned Jewish law (Acts 22:3). The wisdom of our elders is an important part of discipleship in Christian community, and we celebrate the contribution and wisdom of our elders in forming Christian disciples. Even if Gamaliel was not specifically Christian, his wisdom was a fruit of fearing God, and it supported God’s purposes well.
