The mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ.  As a United Methodist congregation, Northern Hills affirms and joins in that mission of the greater church.

Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (Matthew 28:19-20, NIV)  This is the Great Commission.

Disciples are those who have trusted Jesus, made a commitment to live for Jesus and are allowing their lives to be shaped by Jesus.

Trusting Jesus means to accept Him as Lord, therefore, our mission is to invite people into a relationship with Jesus based on “grace through faith.”  People are initiated into the church and the life of discipleship through baptism.

Following Jesus means to embrace the ways of Jesus. Therefore, our mission is to teach the truths of God found in the Bible so that these truths begin to shape and define our lives. Jesus taught that the most important action in life is to love God fully and to love our neighbor as we love ourselves.  This is the Great Commandment.  Love is the mark of the life of discipleship, and this love is based on the unconditional love God has shown us in Jesus Christ.  A disciple lives a life of selfless love.

As we trust in and follow Jesus, our lives change and we discover how our life purpose is found in Jesus; therefore we talk and teach a lot about discovering and using our spiritual gifts, discerning God’s will, and how to “hear” God’s call to service and mission.

Following Jesus is the adventure of a lifetime.  We don’t want anyone to miss out on it.  All of our programs, ministries, and missions in one way or another help us accomplish this goal of making lifelong followers of Jesus Christ.
