Mission Under the Bridge, Service Opportunities

Mission Under the Bridge is a ministry for the homeless of San Antonio. This ministry partners with the SAMMinistries and is not only a blessing for those we serve, but also to those who serve. For more information on the Mission Under the Bridge ministries or the SAMMinistries, contact Jo or John Hess at 210-590-1811 or mission_bridge@yahoo.com.

The Mission Under the Bridge Ministry isn't just a ministry that serves one hour a week on Saturday mornings. Do you ever wonder what happens to the donations you place in the wooden box in the Gathering Area? At least twice each week these items are sorted by volunteers. While most items are provided to the homeless on Saturday mornings and the SAMMinistries shelter, other items are delivered to the Transitional Living and Learning Center, which is sponsored by the SAMMinistries. The center’s mission is to help the homeless, and those at risk of becoming homeless, attain self-sufficiency by offering, with dignity and compassion, housing and services. Another organization to which your items are donated is the American GI Forum. This organization helps homeless veterans with job interview skills and dress.

OUR VOLUNTEERS: Our homeless ministry depends entirely on volunteers. Each week it takes approximately 25 volunteers to make this ministry a success. Age isn't a factor. Those who help range in age from 4 to 80. Please consider volunteering your time any Saturday. Check out the photos of our ministry activities.

IMMEDIATE NEEDS: Your gracious donations of adult winter clothing, socks, jackets, backpacks, work shoes, and boots are needed to help our homeless brothers and sisters. Mission Under The Bridge Homeless Ministry is committed to helping the homeless. Please help us to help them.

WHAT WE DO: This is an exciting outreach ministry which meets every Saturday morning, and no two are alike. Those we serve are not only homeless, but often are mentally or physically challenged. Some have addictions that they just can't beat without asking for God's help. That is where we come in. We provide compassion and friendship, spreading God's Good News to all who come. Church is not about the building... it's all about the people. This ministry exists solely on your prayers and donations and receives no part of the NHC budget.

DONATIONS: If you wish to donate new or used items, please check out our brochure as you may have something that you no longer want or need that could be donated to this ministry. All donated items may be left in the Mission Under the Bridge box in the Gathering Area. We have ongoing needs for toothpaste and backpacks.

SATURDAY SERVICE OPPORTUNITY: Everyone is invited to join us on Saturdays - 5:30 AM for those helping to prepare breakfast and 6:30 AM for those joining us to caravan to the Commerce Street bridge. Meet at the NHC kitchen, entering through the Food Pantry. Join us to help prepare and/or serve breakfast.

PRAYER MINISTRY: Each week the Mission Under the Bridge Ministry team collects prayer requests from the homeless of San Antonio. We send an email to all those in the community who wish to pray for them. The prayers are being heard and lives are being changed. If you would like to be included on the prayer request address list, please email Jo Hess at mission_bridge@yahoo.com.

DONATE YOUR PRINTER CARTRIDGES: Ink cartridges are still being collected and the proceeds from this helps fund the ministry.  Your old cartridges help to pay for water for the homeless community. Please continue to donate your used printer cartridges. A donation box is located in the Gathering Area.

SAMM FACTS:

SAMM is the acronym for San Antonio Mission Ministries, an interfaith ministry. Their mission is to help the homeless, and those at risk of becoming homeless, attain self-sufficiency.

We are now teaming with SAMM to ensure this shelter can continue to provide services to the homeless. SAMM operates a Christian-based non-profit shelter in the heart of San Antonio, serving an average 60 families, 140 children, and 206 single adults without children, everyday. They provide services such as shower facilities, medical care, a clean bed, transition services, and case management. White flat twin sheets, white pillow cases, and pillows (less than $3.00 each at Wal-Mart) are greatly needed by SAMM. To contribute these items, bring them to the church, and place them in the Mission Under the Bridge box in the Gathering Area.

SAMMinistries was founded in 1983 by eleven downtown congregations. It has grown to be the largest provider of shelter and supportive services in San Antonio. Their doors are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to provide a warm bed, clean clothing, life skills training, spiritual nurturing, and through collaborating partners, access to meals, medical care, job opportunities, substance abuse, mental health counseling, and more.

SAMMinistries has a Transitional Living & Learning Center that serves up to 40 homeless families who may remain in the program for up to 24 months. Life skills classes are provided.

If you would like more information about the SAMMinistries, check out their website at www.SAMM.org, or call Jo Hess at 210-590-1811 or mission_bridge@yahoo.com.

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS
AND SMALL GROUP
OUTREACH PROJECT

Here is an idea of a great and easy to do outreach project. Designate one day each month to bring something for the food pantry. One Sunday could be "Can of Soup Day" or "Box of Cereal Day". This will help keep the pantry filled throughout the year. For more information on outreach projects that you or your group can get involved in, please contact Jo Hess at 590-1911.

GROUPLIFE RECRUITING
NEW TEAM MEMBERS

GroupLife is looking to add new members to our team. Being part of GroupLife is a great way to help others get connected within the church. We help church members to get involved in serving Jesus Christ through a variety of activities. We generally meet once a month on Sunday after the 11:00 am service. Please contact Carol Marquardt at 210-877-1414 or nutcrachers80@aol.com for more information.
